1986 BOY SCOUTS JAMBOREE –
When the Boy Scouts contacted me in the summer of 1986 and asked if I would get involved with training the scouts how to drive ATV’s at the Jamboree I was more than happy to help them out by lending them 2 new ATV’s and 4 helmets. I looked into my distant past as a youth and remember fond memories of going to Camp Nemo in Ontario. Two old friends of mine who now have passed to the Lodge above - George Christie, Bedford N.S. and Ken Margeson, Beaverbank N.S. - between them had over 130 years in the scouting movement.
What a great opportunity to promote the sport of ATV’ing, teach some good safe riding habits and at the same time give these youngsters something to remember for years to come.
Of all the activities
for the scouts to do at the Jamboree, learning how to drive an ATV safely was
the most popular by far. I managed to
take an afternoon off work one day and watch the boys in action and get some
pictures.
When it was all over,
the ATV’s were returned to me with not even a scratch on them - this was after
between 600 and 1,000 scouts and a few adults had used them! I would say they lived up to the scouts’
tradition.
